Cherokee National Forest

The southern portion of the Cherokee National Forest, with its thousands of acres of forested mountains and rivers, forms the heart of the Tennessee Overhill.

Fall color extravaganzas and the explosion of spring wildflowers create a spectacular backdrop for waterfalls, rivers, streams, and trails.

Contact one of the Cherokee National Forest District Offices for additional information.

  Water

Water sports include whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, and skiing. Commercial outfitters rent equipment and provide guided trips on the Ocoee and Hiwassee rivers. Four lakes, with boat ramps and beaches, are there for swimming and boating enthusiasts.  The Ocoee Whitewater Center is a must stop.

Hiking

The forest is laced with trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

Hunting

Game species include Russian boar, black bear, white tail deer, turkey, and grouse.

Fishing

Fishing is popular and it varies from "put and take" streams to those with natural populations of trout. Lake catches include bass, crappie, and pan fish. Fishing guide companies offer equipment and expert guides.

Mountain Biking

Mountain bikes can be rented and guided mountain biking trips can be arranged through commercial guide services.

Wilderness

Designated wilderness areas provide solitude.

Watchable Wildlife

The Cherokee National Forest is home to one of the most diverse populations of plants and birds in North America. There are a number of designated watchable wildlife areas.

Scenic Byways

The Cherokee National Forest and the Tennessee Overhill can be seen by cars from two national scenic byways. The Ocoee Scenic Byway is the nation's first Forest Service Scenic Byway. The Cherohala Skyway is the newest federally designated National Scenic Byway.

Lodging

There are campgrounds that range from modern to primitive. The Historic Donely Cabin is also available for overnight rental. Along the fringes of the forest are bed and breakfasts, lodges, cabins, and motels.
