Rivers


The Tennessee Overhill is blessed with four rivers, each with its own distinctive personality. Cabins, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, lodges, and motels are conveniently located nearby.

Hiwassee Scenic River

The river winds through scenic gorges and the pastoral community of Reliance.

Canoeing, kayaking, rafting, and tubing are allowed. River outfitters will rent funyaks and rafts. The Hiwassee is primarily Class I and Class II. Certain sections may be considered Class III.

Named by Trout Unlimited as one of the Top 100 Trout Streams in America, the Hiwassee is regularly stocked with trout. Fly fishing companies will provide guided fishing trips, instruction, and equipment. Annual Kids Fishing Day.

Ocoee River

Site of the 1996 Olympic Canoe and Kayak Slalom Races, the Ocoee hosts several whitewater events each year. Commercial river outfitters offer expert guides to help you capture the excitement of the Class III and Class IV rapids.

Whitewater enthusiasts can now take guided trips on the Olympic Race Channel, located at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. Check with the Tennessee Overhill for water schedules, or contact the Ocoee-Hiwassee Ranger Station.

Ocoee Whitewater Center

Home of the 1996 Olympic Whitewater Champions and a whole lot more.

Raft the Olympic Race Channel. Hike or bike the Old Copper Road. Admire the Native Garden. Tour the Visitor Center. Picnic or just dip your feet in the wading pools. Annual events include Kids Fishing Day, Tanasi Bike Festival and the Ocoee Rodeo. Contact the Ocoee-Hiwassee Ranger Station.

Tellico River

Known for its swift waters and trout fishing. Depending on the natural flow of waters, kayaking and canoeing are allowed. Annual Kid's Fishing Day. Annual Trout Fishing Tournament. Contact the Tellico Ranger Station.

Conasauga River

The Tennessee Overhill's only Underwater Watchable Wildlife Viewing Area. Canoeing, fishing, and hiking. Contact the Ocoee-Hiwassee Ranger Station.
