Wildflower Explosion

From late March to early June, the Cherokee National Forest provides an array of wildflower viewing opportunities, especially along the John Muir National Recreational Trail in Reliance, Tennessee. Bloodroot, trout lilies and spring beauty are some of the early bloomers that can be seen beginning in late March. They are usually followed by a rapid profusion of different kinds of trilliums, dwarf iris, mountain laurel, devils bit, flame azaleas and Solomon's seal. These beauties usually bloom through late spring into early May. Not to be forgotten are the rhododendron found in the higher elevations of the Forest. For those who prefer something more active that looking for wildflowers can try their hand at flyfishing or canoeing on the Hiwassee River. While in Reliance, stay in the historic watchman's house. Built around 1891 the watchman's house was constructed by the L & N Railroad on the north side of the Hiwassee River. The railroad watchman used the house to watch for signs of fire on the wooden bridge after the coal-fired engines passed over. This cottage, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Reliance Historic District, has been meticulously restored and furnished in keeping with its historic significance and is available for rentals
