With modern cars and other methods of travel, it’s easy to forget the days of trains and journeys to towns that were once unreachable. Come visit the Niota Depot and take a step back in time.

Currently home to City Hall, the railroad Depot in Niota, TN is the oldest standing depot in the state of Tennessee. A Depot Preservation Committee has been formed. Built in 1854, the brick depot had tw separate sections–one a ticket booth, office and customer seating, and the other a large open warehouse for freight. Federal forces occupied Niota, then known as Mossy Creek, during the war and even turned the depot into a minifortification by knocking out bricks from the freight section so their rifles could fire on passing troops. During the second half of the war, the 2nd Ohio heavy Artillery, Company C and the 1st Wisconsin Heavy artillery, Company C, were stationed in the town at different times and both units used the depot.

This was a very beautiful drive. It had a lot of overlooks and the trees were very beautiful. We also rode over to Joyce Kilmer Forest. This was a very nice hike and was amazing to see all the older trees. I would advise to take a bathroom break before the trip across the mountain.Unbelievable beauty

Incredible drive through the Cherokee National Forest. Lots of hiking, waterfalls and mountain streams. Areas of the skyway are rather curvy, so beware. Some like to speed through this area either in road rally’s or on motorcycle. Have seen several severe accidents. A MUST visit for all the beauty!Gorgeous views

Nice smooth road that’s a lot of fun with beautiful sights. There’s plenty of pull offs for photos and small hikes and it makes a really nice scenic drive.
